Have you reduced the amounts you charge customers? I notice that I received less for my July Sale compared to previous sales. I do not remember receiving a notification about any changes to photographers' income.

It depends on what size was licensed. Perhaps you only sold a smaller version this time?

No the sizes are exactly the same but the payments were different

Hmm... don't know then. Guess we need a mychillybinner to come along and explain.

You're right Photohunter. Of 2 standard license photos sold this month the second one earned me nearly $3 less. I wonder what's up?

I just checked to see if the photographers' payments have changed, but they still say 35%, so I am a bit puzzled. I wouldn't be so harsh as to say photographers are being screwed and I've found the MCB team really good to work with, so I'm sure we'll get to hear what's going on soon.

When stock photography was film based then I could understand the library keeping 70% because they had to have mountains of storage, shelving, proper temperature controlled rooms and lots of people to maintain the library. Chillbin only needs a small number of staff and a server. Hardly comparable to the costs of holding a hard copy storage system. Other overseas sites I've investigated pay at least 50% to the photographers.

Maybe so, but I don't think it's that unfair given the current trend in the microstock industry, and there are a few other factors to consider than the ones you've mentioned: It's still a young stock site, they do all the marketing and advertising, there's a lot of competition out there. Watching the 'hot downloads' tab I've certainly seen an increase in sales since I joined.

I have to say, that although I am aware of an increase in downloads, it's still not a lot in earnings for MCB. I can well understand the reason for the advertising banners that have appeared on the site recently too. And you don't think that upkeep and growth don't have an effect on servers? The cost of upgrading those isn't cheap. And what about the time it takes for the team to inspect each upload?

Frankly I'm happy to give them the margin for the work involved. And, I think their prices are reasonable - looking at it from both sides of fence.

And furthermore, I'd rather get 35% of $75 for a standard size, than 50% of $1.

As for the minor discrepancy in prices currently, I'm sure MCB will let us know what's happened.

Dear Pixelated, everyone is allowed their opinion, and frankly 50% is a fair asking price for photographers. You mention time for sorting out images ect, does MCB or any other image site take into account the time we spend travelling to get these images, equipment, software for processing images, the vehicles, mileage costs, the cost is endless. All they {mcb and any image site in general}worry about is the final images supplied to them and whether they accept or discard. So hopefully this site will pay more in the future, and don't forget to click on these banners as MCB gets paid per click, which may help us get more dosh in the future :-)

How does 50% of USD100-00 per image sound for a commission. I'm not talking about microsites. You just need to find the right stock sites to subscribe to. Yes the US sites cost money to contribute to but one must weigh up the cost and time involved in preparing images for submission and see if it's worth it in the long run. MCB is convenient.

So how much does it COST to contribute to the US site? And immediately your return percentage has been whittled down from 50%. I'm presuming you have first hand experience of overseas sites? So tell us of all these sites you belong to and getting such a good return from, and why then you are botherering with MCB?

You'd get 100% return if you sold your own stock from you own site. Or would you? After server fees, the fees for having a paying facility on your site (not cheap), and all the other snags not including marketing, you know you wouldn't get a good return. Plus, there are a huge number of microstock sites that are undercutting everyone. They are the ones we should be complaining about.

And, of course I'm well aware of a photographer's time and cost of equipment etc. but it's not all one-sided.

My opinion remains. I think MCB is fair from both sides of the fence.
