 Hello $$FIRSTNAME$$,

  mychillybin photographers' news
mychillybin summer 16 photo competition - winners

web version of this mychillybin newsletter

It has been a real buzz printing out competition entries to look at in greater detail, and reviewing them with a bunch of relevant people.  There is agreement about the winners, and also a great many favourable comments about the magic lighting images in particular.

Entries
All the mychillybin summer 2016 competition images have been moderated and almost all made it into the library. You can see all 48 accepted images here at Competition2016, or by searching for 'Competition2016' with Editorial selected.

Magic Hour lighting entries are here at Magic Hour, or found by searching within the above search and including the term magic hour.  Similarly Kiwi Party, and Small Town.

Small Town
Several great entries in this category capturing various elements of small town life in New Zealand.  To mention just two, the Gore town sign from Belinda Osgood impressed, as did the distant Omaha view from Graham Prentice. The winning entry from Pippa de Court, shown below, was selected in major part for the way it provides a nicely composed broad overall impression of many aspects of small towns in New Zealand, with layers of interest to hold attention.

Some of these points of interest are only visible in large prints, but many also show in screen images:

  • Whangamomona Hotel - Home Of The Republic in 1989
  • Forgotten World Highway
  • RIP Mick Herlihy temporary sign
  • Vehicles parked on the grass
  • Burnout tyre marks in the intersection
  • Steam train signage
  • Old weatherboard and timber window frame buildings
  • Backyard water tank on a tankstand
  • Mini with racing stripes
  • Bed and Breakfast
  • Farm land
  • Agapanthus plants ...

Well done Pippa $150 for this win.

A Kiwi Party - Christmas, New Year, or Other
Not quite as popular this category, nevertheless with several very good library images for commercial use.  The letter F features, with very usable images of food, fireworks, family/friends and even a dragon at the Farmers Santa Parade.   Winning entry, however, went again to Pippa deCourt with her iconic kiwi picnic party scene.  So natural and so much going on.

Well done Pippa, another $150; others will be relieved to know Pippa was not third time lucky.

Magic Hour
This category produced many stunningly beautiful images, as can of course be expected when golden lighting conditions are present.  This photography is for those who are up with the sunrise, or still around at sunset.

Here are just seven to illustrate the point - each benefitting dramatically from the beautiful light.  Although our sample of viewers was small, Auckland city appealed particularly to young Auckland adults (including recent migrants), the DOC hut to those who love the outdoors, the two coastal scenes to lovers of more traditional kiwi coastal landscapes, the two people images for their warm emotive treatments, and Auckland emerging from the mist for its particularly powerful composition (even better in print).

All of these are great images and will be given exposure on site.

The winner in this category, and 2015 summer overall winner as well, goes to Alistair Lang for his beautiful golden backlit treatment of a New Zealand Koru, set amongst supporting fronds using differential focus to make the koru really 'pop'. This image really speaks for itself.

Congratulations Alistair, $200 for this image entry, and we hope many sales on site to follow.
Compliments and comments are welcome on the forum posting for the Summer 2016 competition.

A big thank you to all for your entries, which make this all possible.  Only 249 days till Christmas, and we can do it all again, but even better still.

cheers for now
