The days are lengthening and warmer weather on the way - so time now to get the annual mychillybin summer photo competition underway.

2015 - 2016 Competition Subjects
There are three subjects available this year. Up to three images may be entered for each subject, so up to 9 images can be entered in total. The subjects are:

(a) Small Town New Zealand
Defining this geographically or on a population basis could cause lots of trouble; lets avoid that by just excluding Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga and the Mount, North Palmerston, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, and Dunedin and any other place you think too large to quality as small. So, yes we mean small town places like Raetihi, Raglan, Rahotu, Rai Valley, Rakaia, Ramarama, Ranfurly, Rangiora, Rapaura, Ratapiko, Raumati, Rawene, Rawhitiroa - to cover just the Ra's, and many many more. Some recognizable visual link with the town is needed.

(b) A Kiwi Party - Christmas, New Year, or Other
Images with model and property releases are welcome, but so are cleverly taken images that do not need releases - such as with focus on a near foreground object of relevant interest and very shallow depth of field so that the people beyond are seen but not as recognisable individuals. Marketers often want people in images, but not identifiable people as that can needlessly restrict the 'audience' that will identify with the product or service being advertised.

(c) Magic Hour Lighting
2016 being a romantic leap year - the third 'subject' is a lighting condition - that short beautiful time of the day (evening, or they tell me early morning too) when almost everything looks very much better than during the rest of the day.

Now if your favourite image is of a Kiwi end of year work party in a small New Zealand town, taken during the magic hour ... you can enter it in all three categories if you wish, but it will count as three entries.

Entries
All entries need to be uploaded at the mychillybin competition menu tab along with any model or property releases needed at the same time. Please include the category name in the Description text. The competition upload program now allows photographer competition image entries to be spread over multilpe uploads at different times.

Please do not upload competition images in the normal image upload process as well, or duplicate images result.

Entries close at midnight on 29 February 2016. The rewards for the winning images in each category will be smug satisfaction, increased site exposure, and one of the subject category cash prizes of $100 or more.

The annual mychillybin summer image competition always produces some superb images. This is a good chance to push the boundaries, take the leap, and try something different to familiar subjects and styles.

The competition system is ready and waiting. Can't wait to see what comes in.

cheers for now

Question... Do competition images go into the regular image database for sale right away, or are they not visible on the site or available for sale until the competition is over?

Photographers can choose time of release to the library.

Competition images are generally processed periodically as the competition progresses, going live on site as they are processed.

If you however would prefer to keep any entry images 'secret' please either enter them on the day before, or on closing date, or else include a note in the Description text of such images requesting that they not be released until the competition closes.

All the mychillybin summer 2016 competition images have been moderated and almost all made it into the library. You can see all 48 accepted images here at Competition2016, or by searching for 'Competition2016' with Editorial selected.

Magic Hour lighting entries are here at Magic Hour, or found by searching within the above search including the term magic hour.

Similarly Kiwi Party, and Small Town.

Winning entries are scheduled for announcement on Monday - a selection has been made, printed, and greet us from the wall along with runners up, but they need to sit on the wall for a couple of sleeps to make sure these are the final choices.

Let us know urgently if your entries are not included at the links above, or if we have misunderstood which subject your entry is intended for.

cheers for now
