I've had only one sale so far this year. Rather pathetic. Is this because I don't have the images people require or have sales dropped off drastically or is the economy still an issue.

How are your sales going this year?

Not sure why your sales are slower this year. Sales overall are still firmly tracking upwards.

February 2014 sales were up significantly on last February (and all previous) February months.

March is quite a bit slower so far, but half the month is still to come and sales are quite volatile on a day by day basis.

Who gets the most sales does vary month by month depending on what sorts of images are in demand that month and the content of different portfolios.

Other people's experiences would also be interesting to hear.

cheers for now

I have half the number of photos that I have on this website on a site in the USA and I have already sold 20 images on that site this year.

I guess it boils down to "Little Old New Zealand Syndrome" :{

Guess it does...Big population means more...less population means less....just checking you know where you are.

I've had seven sales in 2014. Not spectacular but ticking over. Two were images of snapper caught on beaches, with model releases. Two were of a young Maori woman, also with model releases. Three were of NZ agricultural scenes. An overseas agency would probably not sell these images because their content is specific to NZ.

I believe images that are somehow unique can and should be sold for exclusive use at a good price. The royalty-free concept has worked well for a few people overseas who do it on an industrial scale. Some of their images have sold over 10,000 times, although I get the impression those days are over. It's time for a fresh approach.

yes its interesting. from mid nov 2012-mid feb 2013 - 7 sales. The equivalent period this year - 0 sales, with $0 in the earnings column. But 3 recent sales have now pushed my earnings to ensure I do get a payday this month - love those X and XX sales

Maybe the Chillys can tell us exactly how many agencies/companies buy images from this website. Also, are more agencies signing up each year. Essentially all media agencies in NZ should be very aware of the existence of this website. I'm thinking most just go straight to Gettys, iStock, ShutterStock, etc.

Basically how much effort is being put in to directly marketing the website or is it just left up to a simple Google search and hoping for the best.

I doubt that will happen,as i've been reminded occasionally.."business confidentiality"...others are watching, and not only big brother.

The most important customer group for mychillybin are graphic designers and those who do similar and related work, although a number of other important niche customer groups are very good customers too. The major NZ press players are not a consequential volume or value customer group for mychillybin at present, as these players often choose to source offshore commodity imagery, at exceptionally low cost.

The most recent significant mychillybin marketing spend was last Wednesday through sponsorship of the Design Assembly meeting in Auckland, attended by 100 paying designer attendees - with good exposure being given. All activities by this group are sponsored including occasional ones in Wellington and Christchurch too. This involvement is long term and very much in the public domain, so can be openly mentioned.

Before that, was a direct mail campaign in January and February 2014, along with ongoing selected involvements in online search and social media.

There are currently 5,142 enrolled members in mychillybin - the number growing almost every day. Approximately half of new members at mychillybin have consistently been from referral, existing customers referring colleagues and friends. This is a very good sign for any business - as generally only satisfied customers refer.

As William correctly points out, mychillybin will unfortunately not disclose much about its marketing activities in this public forum as it is monitored by competitors (who do not disclose their activities either). It is not in photographers' nor mychillybin's interests to do so.

New features will be released on site soon, probably the first within 2 weeks, that are intended and expected over time to have the effect of increasing the value of sales, as well as the volume.

The chillys are pleased with consistent year on year double digit % growth in sales being maintained through the sluggish GFC period. Not all photographers have necessarily experienced that on an annual basis, as it is a competitive marketplace with volatile demand for various types of images, and competitor offerings.

Hope some of these facts help to give you a picture.

cheers for now

One thing that all contributing photographers should think about.. we should also be considered part of the marketing plan for the site...

How many times have each of us referred folk to the site?

I personally market this site all the time. I'm part of a business group and I 'advertise' this site to them all the time.
