on my personal site I have a mcb logo link on the front page. On images that are both here and there, I also put a clickable link to the image here, seems to work from time to time.

So to go back to the original posts - which was about one member and then another having experienced zero or close to zero sales this year, and wondering why.

They queried whether this reflected the overall mychillybin sales results as well.

The chillys advised otherwise i.e. that mychillybin sales continue to grow year on year in double digits %'s.

So by necessity, other mychillybin photographers have done much better in the last few months, than they did previously - as we see this in the monthly payment numbers too.

So the reason for the low sales by these two members will be to do with the particular customers that have been active and those customers having chosen other mychillybin photographers images instead of theirs. This could be for a number of reasons, including;

* sales are very volatile, and it is entirely possible that with no changes being made the next period of time could produce quite different outcomes by individual photographer.

* mychillybin is continuously lifting the standard of images on site, especially by requiring a higher standard of photographic skill and subject selection for new photographer acceptance. What sold last year may not sell this year, if some of the newly accepted images, are preferred by customers.

* the number of images on site has roughly doubled over the last 3 - 4 years, so for a photographer to still get the same sales (or ideally the same share of the continuously increasing sales levels), they will have needed to both increase the size of their portfolios, as well as even more importantly lift the average quality of images in that portfolio. By quality we mean having the subjects that are in demand and the best treatments of those subjects - all judged by the customers.

We see there is another post started about ideas to help with marketing the mychillybin site for even faster growth rates - great! All ideas are very welcome.

I find the above comment interesting - so due to the number of photographers now on site, we all (as a group) now have to work harder, smarter to fight for an ever decreasing market share? And we are shooting 'blind' because we don't know what subject material is required by the designers at any given time.

I have half the number of photos that I have on this website on a site in the USA and I have already sold 20 images on that site this year.

I guess it boils down to "Little Old New Zealand Syndrome" :{

Is there a difference in price between sites?
And isn't that a conflict of interest - having the same photo on two sites?

I've had 24 sales so far this year, which I think is pretty good.
That said, quite a few of those are for perennially popular images that just seem to keep on selling.
Anything with people, in particular active people and families, seems to have a good chance of selling.
Landscapes, many of which are my favourites from my portfolio, have very little appeal - unless they speak to a theme, such as (for instance) power generation, or great walks, or iconic tourism.

To be frank - feedback from Designer/Art Director friends is that MyChillyBin is good value for money - but they are mystified by the quantity of below average images they have to wade through to find the good stuff.

Perhaps too much quantity over quality?

Yes we agree the quantity versus quality balance is very important.

A screen to allow, incentives to encourage, and information to assist, photographers to prune lesser images from their portfolios is third on the development list at present.

First on the list is an extra customer payment option which a photographers' news will go out about tomorrow, then a way for photographers to request a particular image, and then the above.

cheers for now
