Seusville takes on Woodville

It’s not every day a major international art show comes to lil ol Neeuww Zealunnnd. And it’s really not every day that one goes to the middle of nowhere. A 70 year retrospective exhibition of Dr Seuss work has been touring the major centres of the world and now for a limited time in October 2010, it’s coming to Woodville.

It’s often said that Woodville is ‘half way to anywhere’. Well, it’s true. It’s 75 km north of Masterton and 25 km east of Palmerston North. In the 2006 census 1,398 lived there, and that was down on the previous count. Historically, it was a traveler’s rest spot for Maori and for hunters as they walked from one side of the Manawatu Gorge to the other. Today, it has a similar function at the intersections of State Highways 2 and 3.

The exhibition will house a ground-breaking collection of 70 years of Seuss art history. This includes his illustration Art, Unorthodox Taxidermy and his not to be missed Secret Art Series. Whilst everyone may be familiar with Seuss book illustrations, most of the public are unaware that Seuss was foremost a visual artist who painted and sculpted for his own enjoyment. This collection of ‘Secret Art’ imagery reveals a private side of the artist which most viewers have never before seen.

So get along to the Artmosphere Gallery, 92 Vogel Street, Woodville from 6 to 16 October 2010. The public is also invited to attend the opening evening on Tuesday 5th October, 5.00 to 7.00 pm.

If you’ve never been to Woodville now’s the time to find out just what you’ve been missing out on...
