MCB Studio/Gallery of the month: Photospace

This month’s mcb Studio/Gallery profile is James Gilberd, Director of Photospace. Photospace opened in December 1998, and it is still the only dealer gallery in the Wellington region dedicated to contemporary New Zealand fine art photography...

1. My favourite exhibition to date has to be... ‘The Sound I Saw, the jazz photographs of Roy DeCarava, at the National Art Gallery, Wellington, in about 1985. This was the first photographic exhibition I’d seen, and I immediately went and made a darkroom and learned how to develop and print my own black & white photographs. I was into jazz at the time, so these photos captured the atmosphere and personalities of the music.

2. In my opinion, the key to a really successful exhibition is... Not trying to make The Definitive Statement on whatever the exhibition is about. Relax, and try to do your best. There will be others.

3. My idea of a perfect Sunday is... Not going into work or seeing or talking to anyone who has anything to do with work. I enjoy my job, but six days a week is enough.

4. The best thing about New Zealand is... It’s not too money-driven (outside of Auckland), also, people are not too uptight, but very creative, inventive and resourceful.

5. What makes me laugh out loud is... some bits of Coronation Street

6. In five years I hope to be... taller.

7. Who is currently featuring in your gallery... Shane Hammond (Gilberd Marriott Gallery), and Andrew Ross, Heinz Sobiecki, Lynda Garrod, Julia Brooke White, Mark Marriott, Siren Deluxe, Karen Lee and me (Photospace Gallery).
