 Hello $$FIRSTNAME$$,

  mychillybin photographers' news
mychillybin summer 17 photo competition - winners

web version of this mychillybin newsletter

Some truly great images with fresh treatments of a number of kiwi subjects, and photographers seeming to stretch their capabilities into new techniques with high key, and their imagination with the quirky category.  It has taken a longer time this year to process the entries due to some problems with the site competition function, after the site was transferred to a new hosting environment. Apologies for this delay; it is resolved now, at last.

Entries
All 35 accepted images are here at Comp2017, or can be seen by searching for 'Comp2017' with Editorial selected.  Beautiful Light entries are here at Beautiful Light, or are found by searching within the above search and including the term 'beautiful light'.  Similarly Quirky, and High Key.

Beautiful Light
Winner of the beautiful light subject is Ray Salisbury's Farewill Spit Lighthouse seen below.  The light on this structure makes even this utilitarian built environment structure seem beautiful.  The red/orange top sets off the grey and white steel tower below, with a touch of red on some steps at the transition.  The composition powerfully leads the eye to the structure, with the remaining silhouette and grey further emphasising the colours of the structure, supported by the double bow.  Even some flax to cement the kiwi context.  Well done Ray $175 for this win.

Closely contesting this was Alistair Lang's silhouette of a Kereru in flight, set against bright crepuscular rays radiating up into the sky from a low sun. Again the silhouette sets off the vibrant colour of the sky. The slight motion blur of the Keruru's wings adds further life to the image, and its thirds positioning gives it a powerful presence.

Quirky
Defining quirky in words is difficult, but it definitely involves things that are unexpected or peculiar. The unexpected and somewhat peculiar presence of the Gerbra in this otherwise distanct image, in a way that somehow still seems to belong, works the quirky magic for the chillys, and so Pippa gets the $175 for this subject.

As well as Graham's very creative Dressed Garden Palm, Ray Salisbury's Tramper's Legs impressed as an image with a lot of interest and perhaps peculiar point of view, although this is what is seen (if looking down) when crossing such a bridge.

High Key
Winning image for high key came from Jeremy.  He has used the mood creating aspects of high key to convey a very positive, free, expansive, and serene kiwi coastal image.  The surf sand line nicely connects the riders and the distant cliffs.   With the dark foreground (including the nice reflections) this is perhaps not a totally true high key image for a purist, but there are enough high key elements here in such a superb image, that this has been chosen to win this category, and the mychillybin summer 2017 competiton overall.  So $275 for you Jeremy, and we believe a site sale of the image is imminent for you too, for a wall art installation.

A big thank you to all for your entries, which make this all possible.

cheers for now
