I'm looking at buying a camera and can't decide between the Nikon D40X and the SONY A100. I've always had a Nikon but the SONY has some great features and I have read some good reviews on it. Can anyone help me?

Hi Bevan, thanks for the info.I think I might go for the Sony A100 as it has some quite cool features, like the anti-shake system built into the body.

Hi - Cant comment on the Sony but i have recently brought a Nikon D40x and am really happy with it. The images it produces are excellent, and I find it very user friendly. A UK Camera mag recently rated it as the best entry level digital SLR. I too found it tough deciding which camera to go for, so in the end listed my priorities and then compared these against reviews. Hope this is of some help.

Think of the larger choice of lenses you will have with Nikon...

A no brainer for Nikon surely. They make digital still cameras. Sony make TV's. sound equipment and video cameras. Of the two alternatives stick with Nikon

I'd disagree on the Nikon being a no brainer. A larger number of lenses doesn't equal better.
Sony has a considerable range right up to the pro level and all the old KM lenses will fit as well. As for Sony not being a dedicated digital stills company I'd say that's irrelevant as all the photography expertise has come from Kinolta Minolta.

I bought a Sony A100 about a year ago after extensive research and for a first DSLR you get a lot of bang for buck and the quality is very good. My only advise is skip the kit lenses as they aren't particulary fast; it won't be long before the limitations beome frustrating. Just get the body and invest in better lenses (Which will fit the Sony A350 and A700 bodies)

I agree, I ended up going for the SONY A100 and am loving it. Thanks for the advice on the lenses.

I own a Nikon, not a Sony so I am not biased to Sony but your comment is not accurate. Sony make the sensors for many of the Nikon bodies so they have plenty of expertise. I do however prefer the ergonomics of the Nikon bodies.
