Really, interesting to know,i'm a bit of a heavens person myself and haven't done any star images due to the high iso required, thanks for the info i'll remember that next autumn/winter,cheers.

I know it's your thread Mike, but if you don't mind i like to continue.

The only reason for me getting into photography was that i had intentions of looking at the stars and planets,so i bought a 6 inch telescope which was about 2K at the time so that was cool, then i thought about taking pics of what i was looking at,then came the extra outlay of finding a camera for the job so at the time i wen't and seen a pro down riccarton road in ch-ch {no names}and was recommended the canon 400D,god knows why but i didn't know any better and went with his advice....anyhoo,the camera did good actually, just didn't know how to use it properly at the time,so the self taught started and after a few months of googling heaps of sites and trial and error realised the camera was fine, just my expectations were a bit high, embarrassing now lol.I thought ok i have a camera and a good scope but i can't get what i want, which was nebula photos in Orion and the likes, the further the better. Was a sharp lesson that telescopes have their limitations just like cameras, and if i was to upgrade the scope to see Orions clouds it would have been another 20K at the time,so that's when i needed to get real and choose a more affordable hobby, cheers.

No worries shooting the night sky is what really made me get into photography too

I will be investing in a longer lens soon, either a 200mm or 300mm prime, for shooting nebulas without a telescope. The 600d will do fine with a 2xTC on the 200mm f2.8 (640mm), Will need about 50shots to stack, or maybe I need a tracking mount and do longer exposures, haven't decided yet
Do you still use the 400D? What's the highest usable ISO on that camera?

No,the 400D is long gone,i have a 5D mk11 full frame now.although i have never used a prime lens i would still say you need a scope to get up close to get features of whatever your trying to shoot otherwise you'll just get smudges and definitely a tracking mount for clear sharp images. My first moon image from 007 attached

Awesome moon shot! Is that cropped at all? Yeah, a tracking mount would be great, it's on the list just not yet

Here's my first ever attempt at a nebula last year, 600D with the kit lens - 55-250mm. 1 sec, ƒ/5.6, ISO 6400, @ 250 mm (400mm 35mm equiv), this was only 5 images manually stacked in Photoshop.
I reckon I could capture a more detailed shot, with a 200mm ƒ2.8 + 2xTC, ƒ5.6 at 20,000 ISO, 20+ images stacked would reap some results

The main thing though why I want the 200mm, is to get a closer shot of this, not necessarily to capture hard core details of nebula's, but to capture the stars around it as well:

I have only been doing this for 18 months still have a lot to learn!

Thank you I'm always on the hunt for clear skies close to Auckland, it can be very tricky but sometimes I strike it lucky! Now to ask the wife if I can spend some money...
