Consideration is being given to following an industry trend and making watermark-free low resolution (small size is a more accurate description) comps available for download from mychillybin, on the following basis;

* only for members who are logged in. Comp downloads in all other cases would continue to have watermarks.
* along with a message each time on comp usage limitations and obligations
* with system volume download checks to automatically limit unusual comp download volume, and alert any abuse

This development is proposed because customers frequently request watermark-free comps so that they can show better quality draft layout work to their clients. This is a service they expect as they are able to automatically download watermark-free comps now (when logged in) from some key other competitors offshore and in NZ (e.g. Getty).

Creating an incentive to login prior to comp download also enables mychillybin to start to capture the necessary data to in due course provide customised service and search results for customers, informed by their previous comp downloads (and purchased images).

The risks of such comps being abused are minimal in terms of print markets as the comps are able to be used for quality printing (at 300 dpi), only up to around 40 x 30mm.

The comps are large enough for use as small web images, and could be abused in this way. However it makes little sense for clients to do this as web images are very accessible so any abusers risk significant adverse publicity if/when caught, and all to avoid the minimal $25 image charge.

Queries, comments and suggestions are welcome.

1 question....what does watermark-free low resolution comps actually mean? is that a designer term?

An explanation for photographers would be a sensible idea; yes a comp is a designer term. Essentially to a designer, a comp is a mock up of the intended final artwork showing proposed layout and indicative content, to enable presentation to the final client.

On the mychillybin site a comp refers to a small size copy of an image (including a watermark) that can be downloaded free of charge for use in artwork comps. The mychillybin watermark is the semi transparent mychillybin logo and lines placed over the top of such images.

Both designers and mychillybin want the comp to look good to aid presentation to the client, but not to be so good that parties are tempted to use the comp illegally in the final artwork instead of downloading the legitimate higher resolution file.

Would this allow for a larger percentage payout to photographers?
