On Campbell live last night there was a story about a Maori man, Joe Rauhina, with full face moko who did a modelling shoot for a photographer who supplies Getty images - he got paid $1500 for the days shoot, and the images are available on Getty. For those that missed the show, the url is http://www.3news.co.nz/Moko-model-disputes-image-rights/tabid/367/articleID/235305/Default.aspx.

Joe is now pretty unhappy about the usage of the images. He is now on the dole but Getty sell his face for many $1000's. An example of the getty images is http://www.gettyimages.co.nz/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&language=en-US&family=creative&p=maori+warrior&assetType=image

I am not saying what is right or wrong or the ethics of the situation, but just a small warning that when you get your "models" to sign the their releases make sure they really understand what they are signing.

Yes, a bit of a worry. A friend of mine was walking through Hong Kong and looked up and saw himself on a humungous billboard advertising haemoroid cream!! The risks we take eh?!

Good information - model releases are the safety document for the model, photographer and mychillybin, and it is important that anyone signing them understands them.

As to haemoroid creams - mychillybin has licence clauses excluding use with such personal products. Professional designers generally understand excluded uses for stock images. If you see any mychillybin images used in ways that you think may be outside the licence terms please let us know.

Cheers for now

Is there any possibility in the future that Chilly will accept model releases signed on an iPad. There is a brilliant time and paper saving app and it would be great to use. I would imagine in 5 years no one will use paper releases. Maybe Chilly could be ahead of the curve on this one?

You are increasing our excuses to add iPad to our technologies - not sure how many photographers have them though? Sounds not too difficult to do this - but would need to check on the legality in NZ of an ipad signed document - anyone know this?

cheers for now

I do know that electronic documents and electronic signatures are admissible as evidence in a court of law in NZ. The electronic document and signature have to be locked down though, e.g. cannot be tampered with or repudiated.

I have come across a model release app for the iPhone. I think it would be great if we can have this facility on mychillybon, along with an app for Android pretty please!

Yes widening to a few more devices would lead to more use - let us talk to our IT support - they are quite smart.

cheers for now
