Guys, you know I don't like to make a fuss - victim of tall poppy that I am - but I just wonder sometimes about consistency across the board of photograph selection. I have had some images rejected for a reason that at the time seems reasonable, only to see someone else's image of similar content accepted. Take for example my photo of a belly dancer, from waist down. Rejected because it had no NZ content. (I could argue that being a multicultural society it doesn't need any specific NZ content, the dancer is enough). However Rob Tuckers fabulous image of the spanish flamenco dancer, from waist down with no NZ content has been accepted. Sorry Rob, great image. I just needed to vent my spleen and this seemed like a good example. I have more, want to hear them? No, I'll spare you. I'm sure it's not personal.........just wonder if different selectors are working to different standards? Anyone else had this happen to them? Karen

Thanks Karen - you make a very fair point, arising from the team's struggle to find how to capture New Zealands newer ethnicities and aspect of their cultures, without loosing a more traditional New Zealand distinctivness. Suggestions from all on how to achieve this are most welcome. The special prize in the photographic competition specifically seeks mixed ethnicity images.

At present it helps if images of activities includes something 'visually linked' to New Zealand, or are linked in the description to a New Zealand event or place, or if the image is exceptional photographically. But none of these are absolute - just helpful guides used by the team.

Further challenges this week of this nature for the team will be the Chinese New Year images last weekend from Albert Park in Auckland. Other years some have been accepted and some rejected.

With the many cultures/multicultural society we have in NZ, I think some photos need to be accepted to show diverse arts, events, etc that are held through-out NZ.
It would be very hard that all photos contain NZ content in them because alot of these events are decorated around the culture, theme and people; so say Irish-dancing at the local AMP show is not going to be surrounded by ferns. Chinese lantens streaming across a decorated street won't always have the Southern Cross in the night sky, if you get where I'm coming from, these are scenes/events we see in NZ.
Classes like the Belly-dancing are taken at NZ Polytechnics, night clases or dance schools, people learn so they can perform at events or intertainment. NZ people dress up to take the part in whatever the event might be at the time.

So my suggestion to be fair, you have to look at and maybe state in the rules, that it is to be mentioned in the description of the photos before up-loading to be accepted, Is this an annual event? of what place? Is this an advertised region or national event? Community event? The Place? The Event, was it a Gala Day, AMP Show, competitions, Food festival, etc etc?
That should give you a bit of a guide-line on those diverse photos submitted (like the dancers) that are going to fit into the mychillybin NZ content, even though it might not show any NZ content, it does happen in NZ. Advertise it in the description of the photo, the event, where and what's it about, then it's up to our customers.

Might be a couple points there that may help.
Kathleen.

Thanks very much for these contributions - a new category will be created, named (in the interim) Culture - Diversity. This will be used for such images. Their acceptance will continue to be guided by (i) whether or not they are visually linked with New Zealand, or (ii) have a NZ event or other detail included in their description, or (iii) are exceptional photographically (any one being enough to potentially qualify), as well as by the general requirements for all images. Image volume in this category will be monitored so that it maintains an appropriate balance with other aspects of NZ life. There are already quite a few Chinese New Year images in mychillybin, so new angles and approaches are needed for further images. In due course some further existing images in the library will have this category added to them, and a more extensive review of 'culture' related category names will be undertaken, to achieve a more meaningful structure. Thanks again for the help with this development.
