Hi Canon S I
I'm a member of a photography club, now about 12 years, and have learn't heaps.
I have met alot a wonderful photographers by going to some of the regional conferences and area meetings that I can get to. Club field-trips can be heaps of fun joining together for the day.

You will learn heaps from critiques on your images from club judges. Just remember it is others opinions and you might not agree, but keep an open mind.
Competition is good to sometimes get you out of your comfort zone, makes you look for more than the obvious to be in the running for those honours or medals.

Thanks for your reply Kathleen and your funnies ,I know i have trouble with composure and am sure the club will give me guidance in this area, also looking forward to the trips and social side of belonging to such a well known photographic society.I have now got all my lenses and 2 bodies that i need now so that gives me the equipment and inner strength i need,so if anything goes wrong with my pics it's me that stuffs up and not my equipment.I know they all say it's not what your using but how you use it but i don't agree,if your after a sports shot that needs f2.8 then you need that lens, you can't get a fast shot at f5.6 and get the desired effect,{which is to freeze the action and have good Bokeh in the background}Anyway i'm working on getting my camera and lens into AMI stadium this weekend for the Bledisloe but getting stonewalled every turn, seems you have to be an accredited photographer,i have 1 more option which will try tomorrow catch ya later

All the best for the rugby shoot this weekend Canon S I ,hope you have heaps of fun catching the moment.

I did a rugby game here last weekend, I was asked to go do some photos of the home team, so stayed around for the action also, have not done sports for awhile, so re-fresher was good, missed a few goodies . My own fault, I should be out there more

Hi Canon SI,

I was a member of the North Shore Photographic society for about 3 years, in that time I went from a C grade to an A grade worker and achieved LPSNZ. I'm sure that the club helped me to improved my photography plus gave me confidence to do exhibitions. Now I've moved out of town and joined the much smaller and less formal Wellsford Club and am enjoying that too. I can't speak highly enough of belonging to a camera club, it's great networking, great to be able to share images, get feedback (even if you don't agree with it) and good to talk to other people who not only understand what language you speak but are genuinely interested!

The thing I personally struggle with is that clubs tend to focus on technique, lighting, composition etc, it's a lot about knowing the 'rules' of photography which, don't get me wrong, are really important. But I need another outlet for the artistic side of my photography, those images that hold a deeper meaning for me, or tell a story. Some of my images the club judges just don't get. So I also belong to a photography discussion group where the focus is entirely different and I am challenged on a whole other level. I pick and choose which images I put up at club night, in the same way as I pick and choose what I submit to chillybin.

So go for it, enjoy your club
Cheers,
Karen

Clubs can get stuck into a rut with some members sticking toconvention and not having foresight. Each club/society has its own culture and I recommend you visit a few to see which culture suits you.
