Not sure exactly what feedback you were wanting but here's my 2 cents worth, bearing in mind that these are trickly little buggers to photograph.

If you were going for honours at photoclub or entering a competition then it probably wouldn't do so well. The composition is too central (easily fixed with cropping), and I'd boost the contrast a wee bit. However, as a image for a stock library then it's perfectly sell-able (is that a word?) and should do well on chillybin.

One of the best photos I've seen of a fantail was one taken after it had flown into a window and stunned itself - the photographer had time to pose it for the perfect shot before it regained senses and flew off.

Hi Karen and thanks for your thoughts, very helpful.I'm thinking of getting the image done on canvas and entering it in the local art show, and your last paragraph made me and not a silly idea,i've had a couple of birds crash into a window here but nothing exotic as a fantail, cheers.

Hi Canon S.I
If your photo is still full size then you will have plenty of size to do a nice crop to bring the fantail in closer for your canvas. Lovely shot, they are so hard to get, well done.

For myself and my preference only I'm speaking here, I would crop the left to just behind the tail, not to tight, and then from the bottom so the fantail sits in the lower third, that way the eye goes straight to the Fantail and does not get distracted with all the branches and the quite bright light in the image left.
As I said my preference only, but have a play with crops, I'm sure you will see what I mean by bringing the Fantail in closer on that left third, the eye will go straight to the subject.
If you would like me to do a crop to show what I mean, I could copy the one off chillybin into photoshop and then load it back up, but I'm sure if you try on a copy photo you will come up with something really pleasing for yourself for your canvas, but I do think the photo needs a crop to bring the Fantail closer.

Sincerely, Kathleen.

Hi Kathleen, long time no hear ,thanks for your comments have taken on board your suggestions and come up with this version which makes the fantail look more impressive as yourself and Karen suggested.Another question is now that i've cropped {the copy} i now have an image size of 4.5mb will this be enough for a canvas around 24"?.By the way,any pics i post on here feel free to make adjustments, cheers.

Yes, lovely. That's what I was thinking.
Check with your photo-lab you will be using for printing on the sizing for printing 24", they will know exactly what size you have to what size you will be able to print for a great print. Remember canvas has texture, so it's not like a glossy print where a little noise maybe from cropping might show.
After the crop, when you change the dpi from 72dpi that the camera takes to 300dpi for printing, what size photo does it give you in cm?

Wow, what size camera have you got, medium format
Something not quite right.
I'll check back in the thread to your picture size again, and see what I have around that size and see what I get.
107cm, your talking 1 metre .7, or are you talking mm?

I just rechecked sizes,109.64cm x 76.55cm or 43.167 inches x 30.137 inches @300DPI and 43.3MB JPEG.Thought that was pretty big myself but that's what it tells me in my CS2 programme,i use a canon 40D

I can send you a copy if you like to check it out,you can contact me through my unfinished site at everyonesphotography.com,cheers

Hi Canon S.I
Nice camera the 40D.
I only have photoshop 6. But working on a photo something of what you are doing, my photo file size in RAW was 19,437KB. Converted to JPG was 10,800KB.
Sized down though for here so it's not a huge file but you get to see the big image.

I did quite a big crop, a bit like yours and then got a file size of 4,523KB, image size 2076 x 3156px = 73.24 x 111.34 cm photo, (28.833 x 43.833 inch) at 72dpi.

When I converted it to 300dpi for printing, 2076 x 3156px, I got 17.58 x 26.72cm (6.92 x 10.52in) 5,414KB size image, a bit of tidy up work on it to take away distracting objects and highlights in the background. Again sized down for here so it's not a huge image.
So we have 1,000 KB to one MB. This is where you'll have to work it back into MB's, all my files show as KB's.
Best to ask your photo-lab I think, then you'll know exactly where your at.
Kathleen.
