To Tuan Nguyen – daiviet

You have some amazing images in your portfolio, but I am a little concerned about the latest images of the Punakaiki Blowholes, images 100116 – 1345 – 1344 – 1343.
These images have people seen to be breaking the rules in them, they are in a prohibited area and these being made public and especially for sale could involve further consequences.
It clearly states on the barriers around the walk not to go past the barriers. These people in your images are over the barrier in a prohibited area and right down looking over the wall of the blowhole. Stupidity.

I don’t think as photographers we should be seen selling photos of natural NZ that show breaking the rules or misleading images for potential MCB clients.

It would pay to think of the consequences on maybe a tourism company buying one of your images for the front of their brochure that don’t know the content of the image could cause their company damage.
From that image they could have Health & Safety onto them for advertising unsafe practice, and also, what the Department of Conservation would say; especially if tourists start marching down to look over the side of a blowhole because it’s advertised in a brochure photo.

Common sense does not always come to the fore with everyone.
Maybe these people were already down there and not your models. I have seen people down there at times myself when I have been there. And yes, I to have photos of tourists down there with compact cameras hanging over the rocks for a closer shot.
I just thought I would let you know my concerns, as maybe it is something you had not thought about. I think they are great photos to have as memories of your trip, but not to be selling.

The pancake rocks do look impressive, especially when you put a person against them for perspective of size, it does make a great photo and I can see you have captured that, but please think about what I have mentioned and look at changing your photos to some that don’t have people in them breaking the rules.

Sincerely,
Kathleen.

Hi Kathleen

Thank you for pointing out to me that the people I captured in my photos of the Punakaiki blow holes behaved rather recklessly. However, I disagree with your implication that by recording that behaviour I am condoning it - at least that's my understanding of the gist of your post.

If I may be so bold as to take your logic to the bitter end, then may be we should not be publishing any photos of any potentially life threatening activities indulged by so many people, e.g. bungy jumping, sky diving, climbing mountains, scuba diving etc....What do you think?

Cheers
Tuan

Hi Tuan.
Sincerely, I am not implying recording other peoples behaviour means we as photographers agree, like it, or condone it. It’s because of photographers we get to see the world, good and bad, beautiful and ugly.

I am in no way saying what you should take photos of, that’s totally your right.
It was just a concern I had for a NZ Natural image that could be purchased to be used in say, a tourist brochure; the view those people are looking from may mislead if a company was not aware that you can’t view the blowholes from where those people are standing.
As I mentioned, I also have photos of people down there. My reason might have been a bit different though, the weather was a bit rough and I could see them getting blown to bits if one of the big blows happened, so I thought a zoom in photo on their identity would help police if anything happened while they were down there. Thank goodness nothing did, well not before I moved on anyway.
The edge wall they were looking over down there, in this photo they would have been 1/3 into this blow if a big one had come in while they were down there. Scary to think what would have happened to them.

Emails and letters can be difficult to write about concerns at times because of no voice and face expression. My sincere apologises if I have offended you, that was not my intentions.
It is still my opinion though that I think photos for sale of NZ Natural should not have people breaking the rules where it could be mistaken as correct. We might have to agree to dis-agree here.

Regards,
Kathleen.

Beautiful photo included in your post, Kathleen.
Tuan, I also love your latest photos of Punakaiki. I did note the people were outside the allowed area. Maybe the photos would be great in a safety/insurance campaign or something like that.

I remember the 'good old days' before the barriers. I have clambered out on those rocks myself, back before OSH. Then again I used to climb trees and drink river water. The world surely has changed.
