Left Eye Imagery

Just wondered what the general keywording protocol is with the following.

Traditionally, a vertically orientated image is called a "portrait" and a horizontally orientated image is called a "landscape".

But I can see plenty of room for confusion and irritation if someone is searching for a specifically orientated image.

Say I have an image that is a vertically orientated landscape. Should I keyword it "portrait" or "vertical", or "vertical orientation" (if you can put multiple words into a keyword)?

Same with a horizontal portrait of a person. Is this a "landscape" or "horizontal" or "horizontal orientation"?

cheers,

Alison

hm, i doubt many buyers would search soley on orientation, because in many cases a crop can fix that anyway, which they regularly do anyway.

i'd imagine it doesnt matter, it would be better to spend that time putting in other keywords such as "lying" for your horizontal example.

Describe the content as opposed to describing a compositional aspect.
thats just my humble opinion.

i hope that makes sense.
cheers,
Jared

Hi Folks

Mel from mcb here, just a tip when it comes to keywording. Customers can refine their search to review either landscape or portrait images by selecting the orientation in the advanced search.

You will see next to the green 'search' button the 'options' link, customers can search by orientation, colour, image size, license type, most recent, most popular (most viewed) and most downloaded images.

The team is working on a keywording guide which we hope to post on the site in the near future. Till then keep firing through the queries as this will help us to make the guide as comprehensive as possible.

Cheers

I would say portrait would mean a photograph of a single human or animal no matter the orientation of the image, and a landscape would mean an image of land also regardless of orientation.

As a designer, those words mean 'orientation' to me. If I want a landscape photo it's subject could be a portrait of a person.

That says it all. I haven't used the advanced search yet. Thanks Mel. Makes the whole keywording issue a lot more straightforward.
