Hi All

I currently use a Acer Aspire 5100 laptop for my photos, pretty old i believe,i will update when windows 7 appears on the scene.Anywho,image colours are totally different from monitor to monitor and breed of machine,which is why {i think}i have about 30% returns on here,the sharpness,colour, looks fine on my machine but not on others,so how does your machine compare to mychillys,just curios,cheers.

P.S. Yes i get an email saying why some images are rejected and the reasons above are the majority of the reasons :-),thanks.

Calibration of your monitor will help with colour, you don't require high end gear to get this reasonably close. Sharpness is usually a problem at the camera or user end to be honest. Are you over sharpening or out of focus ? If your shooting with a very shallow depth of field then focus will much more critical. Maybe a couple of examples of the pics with issues would help us point you in the right direction.

I just had a quick look at your images that have been accepted (very nice too). I would say that on my monitor (which is calibrated) that many are heavily saturated and slightly warm. I can recommend the Spyder Express calibrator from Datacolor, it's not that expensive and works really well.

Do other peoples images look washed-out on your screen ? this would be a sign that you have over-saturated your images to compensate for your monitor.

Hi Canon_SI.

Since the death of my PC, I am stuck with processing my photos on a laptop (Acer Aspire 4315). Laptops are always a bit tricker than a desktop monitor because the screen varies so much according to the ambient lighting at the time. I try to keep a similar lighting level at all times when processing my images, which is actually fairly dark. I don't know how your work setup is, but a bit too much light on the screen can make images appear washed out and cause overcompensation on saturation. Also the tone of ambient light could theoretically affect the appearance of white balance, although I have not experienced that (not that I've noticed anyway).

I've never calibrated any of my screens used.

Sharpness is definitely photographer/lens caused. I found a great way of sharpening (got to love Google) that has dramatically improved my success rate. I've not had a single image rejected due to sharpness since I began using it.

Duplicate the layer and label it High Pass, apply a high pass filter, somewhere between 0.5 and 1 pixel typically, then set the layer to overlay. Click the eye beside the layer to see the difference in sharpness. It's a very effective, non-destructive way of sharpening. If some areas are sharpened that should not be, or perhaps need less sharpening, simply use the eraser on 30% to finetune those portions, making sure you do so on the high pass layer.
(My apologies it you do know/use this technique, but someone may find it useful.)

Good luck.

Thanks sizzlingbadger,i will google Spyder Express calibrator from Datacolor and hope there's one in ch-ch.I have been to Kens camera shop in town and they will hire out a calibration machine but won't actually do it themselves and i have no idea how to use one or have any inclination to learn how to use one,{photography and processing has all my free time :-)}

Hi Kiwiangel

You could be right with the ambient lighting,i do my processing everywhere,in the kitchen,lounge even at work ;-) so all diffrent lighting,i will try doing my processing in darker surroundings.Also i have been trying the high pass filter technique and having more success thanks ,i'm also using the trial Adobe lightroom 2 which seems easier than cs2 but still working around that one.

If you don't calibrate your display you have no way of correcting or assessing your images correctly. This is pretty much rule no.1 in colour management when using the digital workflow.

Think about it.... if you don't calibrate now you will have to go back and fix every single image when you do want to do things properly.

forgot to mention... many laptop screens are awful (especially older ones) and even calibration doesn't help much as the displays' hue,contrast & brightness all changes when you move your head about in front of them.
