Hi mcb photographers,

We have a hot photoshop tip that we'd love to share will you all. It works wonders on landscape images to really "punch it out".

Open your image in photoshop then follow these steps:

1. Open your Layers palette and duplicate the Layer
2. Select the new layer, go to (at top menu bar): Image/Adjustments/Desaturate
3. Then Image/Adjustments/Invert
4. In your Layers palette, change ‘normal’ to ‘overlay’
5. Go to Filter (at the top menu bar)/Blur/Gaussian Blur - change to 100 (radius)
6. In layers palette, alter the opacity to adjust the strength to suit.
7. Flatten your image and save.

Below is an example of a before and after. As mentioned, this technique is best for landscape images where shadowing may be heavy in the foreground or background. It really brings out the foliage detail in trees too.

Feel free to share any of your hot tips too!

Hey great tip thanks. I have used it and love the way it brings out the detail in the shadows and mid-tones. I have saved it as a pre-recorded series of actions now as I expect it will come in use in the future. Also here is a great link for some other great Photoshop hints that are presented as small video tutorials. http://www.thedigitalphotographyconnection.com/PFDP.php

Cheers

Hi Canon SI,
I'm using an older version of CS but looking on the net I think the layers palette is still the same. Make sure you have selected the new layer that you have made (otherwise it won't let you do anything) and look at the diagrams below - I hope they make sense. If your layers palette still looks different I'll do some further investigating for you!
Good luck.

CS3 panels are the same. I've used this for some years and created an action for it. Photoshop's shadow and highlight adjustment sliders are based on this.

It's fun to share tips. I'll have a browse through my arsenal and see what I can contribute.

Great! Let us know what you think. Like Thadeus and Pixelated mentioned, saving it as an action is a great way to make the process quick and easy without having to remember all the steps!
