Hi Folks

Thanks to some handy feedback from mychillybin photographers, our forums have been revamped to include image critiquing – which basically means that members can swap views and offer handy hints about each other’s photos.

We’re as excited as kid in a room full of cream puffs about this new feature. After all, it’s a beaut way of getting some useful points of view and ideas that you may not have considered.

Of course, it’s important that the forum remains a fun and learning experience, so we’ve put together a few house rules. Once you’ve had a read of these, go for it!

MCB HOUSE RULES
1. Please post only one image in the thread.
2. Images must be saved as jpg files at 72dpi, and no bigger than 2MB.
3. Please include the following information with your image: make/model of camera, f/stop, shutter speed, time of day, location and anything else that will help fellow photographers provide useful feedback.
4. When posting your image ask specific questions about how you would like to improve your image e.g. “How can I enhance the lighting?” rather than just “please critique”. Detailed questions provide other members an insight to the information/help you seek.
5. Only post if you are willing to be critiqued - this isn't a place for showing off, but a place for people to suggest how you can improve. If you don't think you need to improve then this might not be the section of our forums for you.
6. Remember that comments and critiques from other members are their opinions and suggestions only – so if you think you’ll take it personally don’t put up an image
7. When offering critiques or comments, please be candid, specific, constructive, and friendly. When reading them, remember that because web discussions lack facial expressions, body language and nuances of voice, the emotion and attitude you read from a message is often a reflection of your own feelings.
8. The critiquing forums are on a trial basis, so enjoy them and make them work for you!

Cheers for now,
The Chillys

Chris

Hi Mel.
Do we see the images up-loaded by following this forum thread? Will it be a file link that you need to click on for a view of the image, or will it show up in the forum page straight away as an image?
Just checking, as to viewing images up-loaded.

Kathleen.

I imagine that the image shows up in post as I see below the "post reply" box that there is a link to "attach image".

Great work, MCB. I look forward giving this a whirl as soon as I sort an image I wish to be critiqued.

so... who's going to be first?

Hi Chillys and members

This image i took last year on my smaller and slower canon 400D.I guess i was after freezing the action but not sure as this was the right approach for such an intense game as some blur may have added more atmosphere to the image, please feel free to convey your thoughts.Image details as follows,

Canon 400d
F 13
Exp-1/250
Focal length 41mm
Shot in shutter priority programme
Metering-centre weight
Manual white balance

Thankyou in advance :-)

I take quite a few photo's of wildlife. This is a typical close up of a bird, a Weka. How can I improve the composition of images like this for design usage ? In general wildlife photography focuses on portraying the animal, but I'm sure for design purposes there are other compositional areas to consider.

Hi,

I think your right, the image could do with some movement, a slightly longer exposure would achieve this. It also looks a little under exposed, if the exposure was increased a little it would make the colours in the shirts 'pop' a little more. The white balance looks spot on ! If you cropped a little from the left hand side it would make the focus on the active players a bit stronger. Hope this helps, and remember as with all critique it's in the beholder !

Hi Canon S.I
May I have permission to right click your photo of the sports action shot into my photoshop please. I have a couple ideas that may help where I think a visual will help better with my explanation. I'll re-upload your workshop image with my comments.
I will only do a limited workshop because our images are to be kept small here, so the image size is not going to be great to work with.

Hi Sizzlingbadger. Image of the weka.
Really nice sharp and detailed shot of the weka's head. For the shallow depth of field used of F/5.6, you got the most important part of the head sharp and thats the eyes.
Maybe check your histogram on the light end of the graph if you have a photoshop, I feel there could be room to move the light end in for a bit more light, all monitors are different though and this could be just mine.
I cannot really help with an opinon on using this for design, as I am not a designer.
I was thinking though, if it would have more impact if the composition had the head titled slightly more with eye contact direct to you.
Wildlife is not the easiest subjects to do, always moving, but you caught this moment with good sharp detail of the inquisitve look of the weka.
As always, these are just my personal preferences.

Hi sizzlingbadger

First thing i notice is looks like a f2.8 shot, unless the pic has been cropped back to what it is now. Also my friend, your shooting from above, get down to eye level {or below if possible}and use angles for different compositions, huge differences can be made just by placing your camera on the ground and shooting from there, you probably know that, so i'm moving along now, whistle whistle, stride, stride, duck in behind this tree and let you walk on by...later.
