Hi Canon.
Yes; there are some great web-sites out there on all sorts of photography related subjects, wonderful to see you go searching to keep informed, shows interest.
Many people must have spent hours putting their articles into words for us to understand. So here I would just like to say (and it's not a telling off), that if we do copy, and we all do, as it is easlier than quoting it and putting it in our own words sometimes for things like this, it is nice to see an acknowledgement to the name of the person and their website address put in out of respect and a courtesy to their work. Just incase they do have a copyright on their site and come across it on our forum.
Most people don't mind their work being used then, and if they do, they would get in contact with mychillybin and asked to have it removed, rather than have ill-feeling and threaten legal action.
It is important to be squeeky clean in our behaviour when it reflects back on a company etc, in this case it would be mychillybin because we are members in the forum. And; if we put ourselves in their place, I'm sure we would like the same respect.

Great find though, and explains it really well.
Kathleen.

Hi Canon S.I
Yep; moved last year from Greymouth to a small farming area called Ikamatua, between Greymouth and Reefton. I had been in Greymouth approx 13 years, well just out two mins from Greymouth at Coal Creek. Worked at the Snowflake Ice Cream factory for those 13 years until it closed just before christmas 2007 and we all got made redundant.
Flick through an email when your coming over, we could catch up over a coffee if your passing and I'm here. [email protected]

Hi Mel.
As you are working with the web team on this critique page, how about they do the view page for the next competition. That way the memebers can view the photos as they are being up-loaded. Adds to the fun, anticipation and suspense of who will win?
How about another competition soon?

Sincerely,
Kathleen.

Hey there,

I'm one of those people who regularly checks on the postings but haven't yet put my 2 cents worth. So here's my view.....

....anything that helps to improve images has got to be a good thing, not saying that the standards are low because they are not, but we could all benefit from the wisdom and experience of others and in the long term maybe that adds up to more sales right? So I think your idea has great potential. Critiques are very valuable if they are constructive and see the positive as well as the negative with suggestions on how to improve. My experience with having my images critiqued is that people tend to be hesitant to be honest, not wanting to cause offence, or simply say "Nice image" "Good work" etc which is flattering but teaches me very little. Here's a quote from Jim Coe that says it all....

"We don't want to be unkind, and therefore may be less than honest in giving negative feedback about images. I say let it all hang out! One learns little from someone telling us our work is "great" or that they "like it". In fact, it can further egoistic "gee - I'm an artist" attitudes that interfere with our true artistic progress. Just like NASA, we learn more from studying our mistakes than our successes. So, I hope we won't be diluting the negative feedback in our very valuable critiques". - Jim Coe

It kinda sounds obvious but something to keep in mind.

I like Canon SI's list, its a very valuable guideline for a judge to use. I can also recommend joining your local camera club to get the benefits of experienced photographers. It's an inexpensive and sociable way to get feedback.

So, like Jim says 'let it all hang out!'

Hi fatsprat.
Great to hear from you, it sort of seemed there was only a couple of us interested in helping out anyone that might like some tips, and of course at times, ourselves included.

Hi William,

Yeh I think Jim Coe is an American photographer that worked a lot with filmography - still photos on movies such as Close Encounters. Pretty famous in Hollywood, but I don't know much about him.

Hi Mel. I think the image critique idea is great but I think it would work better if it has its own space. At the point where you choose "Photography" or "Design" on the homepage of the forums I think creating a link to a critique area would work well. It would keep it contained and allow each photo to have it's own thread rather than multiple photos and comments all in one thread which quickly becomes cumbersome. It will also keep the general discussion forum a bit cleaner as well. Just my 2 cents worth... Cheers Thad
