Keen to hear your suggestions for the subject for the January 2014 photo competition.

I think the themes need to have a distinctively NZ theme or flavour to help generate the kinds of pics that the buyers are looking for.

The comps to date feature concepts that do not necessarily relate to the distinctive NZ flavour that you are seeking to specialise in... a couple of suggestions.. bearing in mind that the assessment criteria should be weighted in favour of NZ themes:
a. SUMMER... camping, fishing, foods, sports, clothing...
b. ARCHITECTURE... houses, street scenes, bach/crib
c. BOATS...
d. Flora...
.. my thoughts...

Why not do some thing a little different... a 24 hour photo shoot (over a weekend) all subjects allowed...theme 'New Zealand's Day.'

- Natural Resources (coal, wood, water, wind...)
- Kiwi childhood (toys/games/activities..., not necessarily involving people)
- Consumerism
- Architectural (parts of/details or whole buildings)
- or how about images with non-NZ objects photographed in a way to make them more 'kiwi-fied' using props, people etc.

That's all I can think of for now.

Like the ideas coming through. Am excited to see what MCB chooses for January.

How about a theme on images that depict the multi-ethnic diversity of New Zealanders such as Pacific Island, Asian, Indian etc. People shots could earn extra brownie points.

- Around the Camp fire
- Life’s a Beach (Playing in our waters)
- Ice-Cream

All good summer activities and things we love to do as Kiwis!

Thanks for all these great contributions ... more ideas here than we can cover this summer, so look out for some more of these ideas popping up during 2014. Including a one day event in due course.

For the main summer mychillybin photo competition, we will run with 3 available subjects, open from now till 5pm on Sunday the 16th February 2014. The 3 subjects are:

1. Kiwi Kai (food)

2. Bivvy or Bach (or between e.g. camping, tramping huts)

3. Summer Selfie.

Very importantly, in each case we are looking for compelling photographic treatment, as well as inclusion of subtle or stronger distinctly NZ visual content.

Entries available; up to 3 per subject, so up to 9 images in total.

mychillybin will award 5 prizes as follows;
a. best image in each subject,
b. best set of 3 images (one of each subject)
c. best image in any subject that includes visually observable multi-ethnic, or minority ethnic (i.e. non white) content.

Property releases and model releases, where needed, to be included at time of image entry. Let us know by email if you would like some Keep-It-Real release forms mailed to you.

To avoid a backlog, and so we can all enjoy seeing progress, entries will be processed through to being live on site once received unless you include Please Hold in the subject text.

Hopefully there is something here for every taste, as well as for those who are up to the challenge of producing three sets of 3 great images.

Can anyone send in, or nominate an icon image that is all 3 subjects - a summer selfie, eating Kiwi kai in a bivvy or bach?

Will send this detail in a Photographer's newsletter in due course.

cheers for now

Clarification has been wisely requested on what style is needed for the Summer Selfies, and in particular if the Wikipedia definition is what is being looked for ...

mychillybin is keen to see images submitted in the style of selfies described in the Wikipedia definition, although more traditional self portraits will also be accepted in the competition. Image quality standards clearly need to be maintained given the market we operate in - so take extra care with any mirrors used, and no camera phone images please.

Also best to avoid the scenario of the first selfie, described on wikipedia "Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie".

cheers for now
