thirds composition rule - august competition winners
Very encouraging to see additional photographers involved and a much larger number of entries. So much so it took a little longer than normal to process and judge.  So to compensate for the delay this month 3 prizes are being awarded.

All images entered and accepted for the library can be seen by searching (with Editorial ticked) for 'thirds'.

A shortish list of 21 images was created first with quite some difficulty, as amongst those that did not make this list there are still some great kiwi images with thirds composition for the library.  In the shortish list see in particular the deer by William, rock reflection by Meg, cow from Kathleen, snail by Graham, farm by markus and the dramatic sails with skytower by Mark.

The process of then choosing 3 winners from this list was very difficult as there are many great Kiwi images with thirds composition.  So the inevitably has a degree of subjectivity.  After much deliberating, three prizes are being awarded as follows:

Winner, Alistair Lang (aldente)

This 'icy rural back road on a winter day' has a diagonal visual flow from the bottom right third, through the centre third, and up to the top left third.  The tall tree sits on the right vertical third line, and the distant peep of road is on the bottom horizontal third line.  This flow through composition, combined with the selective focus achieves an awesome perspective or 3D effect with the viewer being drawn into the image.  Great image Alistair!

Runner Up, Andrea Howard (Andie)

A powerful shot with superbly positioned eyes on the top horizontal third line, and the right eye sitting directly on the impact (or power point) where it crosses the right had vertical third line.   Focus on the right hand eye.  Great upclose composition and expression.

Best Set of 3, Stu Hastie

A new take on jandals with good placement on the thirds lines, horizon near the top third line, and the people in the background adding a great second visual interest and context. Powerful use of top and right third line - and lots of copy space for commercial use.  Love the free leg too. The eye is drawn firmly here to the nicely silhouetted tractor due to its powerpoint positing on the intersection of the right vertical and bottom horizontal thirds lines.  Simple, kiwi, and effective.

Well done Alistair, Andie and Stu, a cheque for $125 on its way to each of you tomorrow, and we will process all (within reason) your uploaded images with priority during October!

A big thanks to all the others who entered as well - really appreciated - hope ot use lots of these on the slideshow over the next month or so.

october competition

The subject for the October 2012 competition is Generations (2 or more, and human).

Remember you can enter up to 3 images, but they must be entered all at the same time.  If you have problems just upload them normally and drop us an email - we are flexible enough to cope. Closes 5pm Friday August 31st.

You have to be in to win, so all the best - as you approach family, friends, colleagues, or yourself, etc to act as models for Generations images.

Kathleen has asked wisely on the forum for further clarification on the November 2102 subject - will be provided in the next few days.

cheers for now
