is there any way to report inappropriate keywords? I looked up "kiwiana" and there are loads of pictures which seemingly have not much to do with kiwiana, thus making it harder to find actual examples.

Kiwiana
Web definitions
Certain items and icons from New Zealand's cultural heritage are often called Kiwiana, a term that represents iconic Kiwi elements,...

There is not any keyword reporting mechanism at present, as keywords are checked and often adjusted during image moderation. However that checking process can always be improved.

Kiwiana is a term that we find very hard to know when to use and when not to use - any general descriptive suggestions are welcome ... say an unpacking or fleshing out of the definition already contributed.

Your quite right Brackish, there are to many images with Kiwiana attached to them, some of mine included, not that i inserted that particular keyword myself but was added at this end of the process.I also searched Kiwiana and there was hot air balloons as mentioned along with countless telegraph pole shots and heaps of sheep, cattle ect..these images can be found in any country so shouldn't come under Kiwiana. To me Kiwiana is something, someplace unique to this country alone and not found anywhere else in the world, arguably any landscape shot in this country would come under Kiwiana as it falls under the afore mentioned conditions, and would a shot of a pavlova qualify as Kiwiana as the aussies claim that?a tricky subject none the less.Good luck on this one Chillys

I doubt many buyers would search specifically for a kiwiana image. Most would have some idea of the subject they want. I never use it as a keyword, although it might have been added to some of my images by the chillys.

I see there's a shortage of images about 'rugby', and I think 'netball' is the same. Bit of a problem to get all those model releases.

Can't help but agree with Mark...and to add we all hold our own opinions to the meaning of Kiwiana. Therefore narrow your search criteria by searching for specific subjects of interests.

the point is I've found a lot of images with questionable keywords. I know the site dreamstime has a way to report a bad keyword if an image sticks out like a sore thumb in your search results. otherwise we may aswell just fill our photos with every buzz word we can to get views. just a thought.

Regarding the subject of "kiwiana" my personal interpretation is things that are iconic New Zealand. What things do you think of when you think of New Zealand. When a specific thing is mentioned does it immediately go "New Zealand" in your mind.

Number 8 wire, gumboots, jandals, tomato sauce bottle, pavlova, etc. Whether these things exist in another country or not is irrelevant in my opinion. When pavlova is mentioned my automatic thought is not "Australia". Anymore than a mention of Wallaby in Australia would make them think of NZ, even when we have wallabies down south.

As far as removing "kiwiana" as a category I personally think that would be a shame. What if we had a non-NZer buyer looking for something uniquely kiwi for their new kiwi home or to send back to a relative overseas. Or an overseas company looking for an image uniquely NZ for their advertising company (eg. travel agents etc). They may not know the term"kiwiana" but I still think it can be a valuable search category.

Just my views anyway.

Kiwiana is not currently a search category. The closest category to Kiwiana is Iconic NZ, which we see as broader than Kiwiana.

But in terms of the use of Kiwiana as a keyword, it seems it may be time to tidy up its historical and future use.

This article, albeit from Wikipedia, seems to be quite helpful in terms of clarifying the term, although we will still need to decide what decades to use the term for.

In general the key question we ask in terms of inclusion or rejection of a keyword, is would our customers be happy being shown this image if they search for this keyword. Which generally means will they see its relevance to the keyword.

Some of our most successful photographers use quite limited lists of keywords with high relevance. Others use quite extensive lists of keywords that are all relevant to some degree.

Extensive lists deliver little value to the photographer however as ongoing examination of mychillybin search terms used indicates that in the vast majority of cases obvious, normal or regular search terms are used.

Keywords that are not relevant in any way deliver a bad experience for image buyers, and so during moderation with such images we seek to either remove non-relevant keywords, or if too many then to simply reject the image.

Appreciate all the comments and suggestions about this, and welcome any more still to come.

PS And as Canon S I reminds below, yes we add keywords to images relatively frequently where we think it will be helpful to searching by customers. (This PS added after first post)

As i have said before, keywords have been added from your end and not from the photographers original uploaded keywords,i know for a fact some of my images have had keywords omitted or added to,obviously i don't mind this minor alteration as it doesn't affect any images.
