mychillybin is considering establishing a number of special collections of images, which would be searchable/viewable as specific named collections on the main site. In some ways much like a Category is searchable at present, but with a more rigorous image selection applying and more prominence to site users.

Present thinking is that the establishment of any Collection would be guided by the following principles (all to apply);
1. Must have a cohesive subject focus.
2. Must be for a subject area for which there is significant demand and limited image availability.
3. May either contain images from multiple mychillybin photographers (or if an individual mychillybin photographer has an appropriate collection on their own then some could reflect the work of one photographer only).
4. Image acceptance standard (composition, technical image quality, and pixel size) would be significantly higher than regular mychillybin image acceptance.
5. Acceptance of images for Collections would be after invitation from mychillybin; although suggestions/nominations from members would be most welcome.
6. The same pricing to apply as standard mychillybin images (users like the current single price business model) - the benefit for the photographer (and mychillybin) being more prominence on site and hence more sales.

Establishing Collections in this way would be intended over time to increase the supply of high quality images in the highest demand /lowest supply subject areas. Achieving this by giving added site prominence to images of this type and hence enhanced sales prospects, and thus incentive for photographers to invest the time and in the equipment needed, to supply such images.

Comments (commendations, questions, concerns, and further improvement ideas) are welcome here over the next few days, and then it is intended to revise this as needed and send out next week as a Photographers' Newsletter for wider consideration.

cheers for now

Is this not the same as Chillybins? a collection of images from one or more photographers in the same place under different titles.

Thanks Canon SI - yes we agree that is a good way to think of it. Some special chillybins assembled to meet specific user needs, and with extra prominence on site. Will think more about your comment in terms of the best branding language options and whether to call these Collections or some type of special Chilllybins.

Either way, i could use an incentive to get out and get some shots of something specific.Since petrol has gone up i no longer drive around looking for something to shoot on a whim .So look forward to you hatching your new plan.

Not sure I get the rationale behind this idea. Would the images be sold as collections, clients buy the whole lot?

In theory, isn't a search result just bringing up a collection of sorts anyway? Particularly if the keywording is comprehensive.

The suggestion that there is some sort of grading to the image quality sort of concerns me. Shouldn't all the images on the site be of the best quality anyway? If they aren't then why are they accepted?

If you are looking to expand on certain subject matters and increase the number of images that are low in number then 1) perhaps remind us what it is you need more of and 2) be more discretional about those that you have too many of (unless of exceptional or novel content).

Thanks Fatsprat

Thanks for these suggestions and queries. Sale of collection images would be image by image, as per normal mychillybin images.

We think that we shoud pursue your idea about providing guidance on photo subject areas that are most in demand, and those least needed, and then being more rigorous about letting this inform photo acceptance decisions. Will put together some initial data on this next week, and then more rigorous guidelines after some further analysis of demand and supply.

On image quality, as you suggest all mychillybin images need to meet specific quality standards. However amongst those that meet this quality level and are accepted, there is still quite a wide range of 'quality levels' in terms of image size, clarity, composition, and other photographic treatments.

Collections would be used for specific cohesive groups (maybe 75+ or more+?) of photographs of outstanding quality, where the ability to give them additional exposure in this way makes it more attractive to photographers to place them with mychillybin, and useful for users to search. At present, by way of one example, we are negotiating to secure a specific new collection of multi-ethnic NZ images. Other collections could be assembled from existing (and newly submitted) images from one or multiple mychillybin photographers.

Hope this helps explain better what we are trying to achieve here. (Thanks for the competitions forum comment too).
