Development of mychillybin over the last 6 months has included release of the Search Within or New function, adding Amex as a payment card type, lifting the camera specification for new photographers, getting all the images indexed at Google etc, as well as several other ongoing marketing activities which are helping to lift sales volumes.

The chillys now, subject to photographer comments and suggestions, would like to turn attention to broadening the mychillybin offer. So it is intended to soon start also accepting and promoting NZ images suited for Editorial Use Only. In short that means NZ images that contain brand names, logos, identifiable people (in public places), and identifiable locations without model and property releases.

These proposed new Editorial Only images are only able to be used editorially - meaning in magazines, newspapers, and some newsletters and blogs.

Editorial Only images are different to all current images at mychillybin which, whilst being available for Editorial Use, are also able to be used commercially in ads, marketing materials etc.

Starting to also handle Editorial Only images has three main benefits for the mychillybin community. First, it allows a significantly wider selection of images to be accepted from mychillybin photographers. Second, it enlarges the image pool available for mychillybin customers seeking editorial use images. Third, as image use editorially grows, it increases awareness of mychillybin, becuase when images are used editorially a credit showing mychillybin and the photographer's name must be printed alongside the image.

Small adjustments would need to be made to existing licenses.

The price of credits, and credits needed per image, would not need to change, as a significant number of existing images are already sold for editorial use in a number of publications around the country.

However, to achieve competitive image supply to the relatively few very high volume editorial image users (who, at present, do not purchase from mychillybin at all due to price), subscriptions for very high volume users need to be developed along with associated 'share of subscription' payment schedules for photographers.

These are seen as continuous improvements to the way the community operates, rather than being likely to have sudden large or especially dramatic impact.

Comments, queries and suggestions on any or all of these points are welcomed, either through this forum, or if they are particularly commercially sensitive then direct by email on [email protected]

Cheers
the Chillys

PS The editorial niche of 'highly time sensitive high value news photos is not targeted with this development and photographers with such photos from time to time would be better served by continuing to seek to place such images directly with clients, as is the case at present.

This is something I have been wanting for a while and I am sure it will be a positive move for MCB. I look forward to seeing the full outworking of this development and what it will mean for photographic acceptance/opportunities.

Thanks for the update team and good job!

PS. just had a thought... not sure how the submission approval process might change (or not) but if we're required to check a box during submission for the photo to be used as an 'editorial' or 'both' I would hope it does not get rejected because it's ticked 'both' but is only suitable/usable as editorial. Maybe the approval/rejection notice might add a bullet point for those images submitted as 'both' but accepted for editorial only ... ? Might not be an issue at all, just letting my mind wander.

Well done and congratulations MCB on your new move for the site,it can only mean more work for us and even more sales for all.I find this new development quite exciting and challenging as it could bring someone like myself out of a photographic rut.Could this possibly mean that say some company needs a photographer and MCB supplys a list of photographers in that region to cover an event and the organiser picks one,or am i barking up the wrong tree there? Either way it is still an improvement and something to help us out photographically in our quest for improvement, cheers

This is a good move for all at Chillybin, and I would support it. Some guidelines about what would and would not be acceptable would be very useful.
Providing a subscription structure for those clients that want extensive publication is essential, it could mean that we see our images in nationwide publications like the Herald maybe? As long as this doesn't mean we become a microstock site, that I would not agree with.

At last Chillybin has fallen in line with other stock image sites. Perhaps some of my images will now be accepted as I have had many potential editorial images rejected because of the tight model release requirement of the past. I might continue submitting images again.

You really need to define what a "very high volume editorial image users" is.

What the criteria for becoming a "very high volume editorial image user"?

How much cheaper will our images be for them?

Thanks for all these encouragements, and helpful comments. Rest assured mychillybin will remain focused primarily on its key customer base, and their needs i.e. Graphic designers and illustrators (and those doing similar work) with supply of fresh NZ images. More on some of the points raised as the project progresses.
