When images from a Canon 5D Mark III taken in RAW need post processing to reduce / eliminate fringing on ridge lines, and the photographer does not have Photoshop ...

is the software that comes with this camera good for this purpose, or would you recommend another option?

Comments appreciated - so we can pass on to a mychillybin photographer.

cheers for now

Below comment comes from one of the reviews, so I would say have a good study through the software for eliminating fringing.

"A new version of Canon's Digital Photo Professional software ships with the 5D Mark III. As well as supporting new features of the camera, it adds a Digital Lens Optimizer function for still images. This refers to a built-in database that allows automatic correction of both spherical and chromatic aberration, astigmatism, curvature of field, diffraction, and low-pass filter effects"

Get a Nikon. None of that nasty Canon fringing problem.

Haha, bit expensive to changing the kit now!

Doesn't matter the brand of gear, chromatic aberration can occur at any time and is due to the lens optics and it can happen with even the top pro lenses. It is not specific to camera bodies.

The software that comes with your Canon most likely has a setting that can minimise or get rid of it. I'm not sure if Gimp can deal with it which is an alternative, but I do know that Lightroom is excellent for dealing with it and is also an excellent RAW converter as well as image cataloguing functions etc. Lightroom licenses are still available as a standalone product and is relatively cheap compared to what Photoshop used to be. Lightroom also has lens specific adjustments built in and will correct according to particular Canon or Nikon (or some other brand) lenses.

RAW images are not 'baked' as in jpgs from the camera and do need basic adjustments. Chromatic aberration can be processed into a jpg by the camera and be a little harder to remove, but a RAW image is easily dealt with without damaging the image.

There are a few different kinds of 'fringing' and can run to blue/yellow or green/magenta or both and often where a bright object like sky meets darker objects like trees. All can be dealt with very successfully in Lightroom.

I hope this helps a little...

I've just had a real good look at Corel's AfterShot Pro 2, and it's an excellent photo editor / RAW converter. This is a real good price as well. If you don't want to use Lightroom, it's worth looking at AfterShot Pro.
