Hi all. My wife and I are having our first baby in August (yay captive model coming!!). Anyway she is keen to get some preggy shots and I haven't done much in the way of portraiture so really keen for any tips or pointers. I like natural light and am using a Nikon D200 with the 18-200mm VR lens. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - Thadeus

Congratulations, Thadeus!

That's all I wanted to say, really as I have no ideas on the shots having never done it myself. There are lots of online articles/tutorials on this subject if you want to do some searches.

Thanks Kiwiangel. Yeah we are both pretty excited! I have started looking online but thought I'd see if there were any pearls of wisdom in the mcb community. Cheers Thad

Hi Thadeus.
Congrats on the bubba coming in August.
Because you are the hubby and the father, you will have the emotions of love for your wife and child, close tender moments that will inspire your images that someone else could only imagine, but you will feel what to do for some awesome tender images that will be cherished.
Go by your emotions when you look at baby in mothers tummy, the light you can use to portray that emotion. AND, set the self timer and get in there with your wife in some of the images, hands on her tummy and close body shapes with soft light can look great and make wonderful visuals.
All the best.
Kathleen.

Thanks Kathleen. Yeah only I hate being on the other side of the lens! Seriously though I'll just have to toughen up for a shot or two. Noticed you can soften up a raw image (using the 'Clarity' control in the Nikon Raw plugin) nicely when you open it in Photoshop that gives a reasonably nice effect over the whole image so will play around with that a bit (after cloning my head onto Dan Carter's body that is....). Not sure what Nikon plug-in you have for photoshop but using the clarity slider to soften is far from ideal. It's far better to use a layer in Photoshop with some blur applied and a mask to control the effected areas.

Hi Thadeus.
When I said soft light, I did not mean soften the image. Though a soft image can look nice as well. By soft light, I meant something like a cloudy day light coming in through a window lighting softly what you would like and the background will fall out into darker.

Hi Thaddeus,
If you're needing some fresh ideas for inspiration try googling 'maternity' photography and check out the websites of some of the professionals out there. There is some amazing work which might give you some ideas on how you want to approach this and what mood you wish to create.
Im looking forward to seeing some of your photos.
Congratulations, Karen

Thanks all for the guidance - I will definitely explore some more options in Photoshop - it is funny how you can get very complacent doing certain things a certain way when there are better and often more obvious solutions out there. I have used Photoshop for over ten years doing commercial graphic/web design and honestly I learn more about it virtually every month. Anyway really appreciate you all taking time to post replies. Hopefully I'll be able to post an image or two in a month or so. Cheers Thad
