backyard winning image - august competition.
Backyard images have all been processed through and the 13 accepted are live in the library.     See them all at this link, or by searching for 'backyard comp' with editorial selected.

In contermporary NZ there is a huge variety of peoples 'backyard' experience.  Whether it is a view over the back fence to the Alps, some bush and birds, a traditional quarter acre grass lawn and veg garden, or simply a concrete balcony on the 99th (well amost) floor of the apartment complex.  The range of images submitted show some of this diversity.

These comps look for a great photographic treatment of the subject. A winner, and runner up, have been selected this month, both who frequently submit strong entries to the competition.

A trike lies dormant, ready for another day of play in a NZ backyard, by Stu Hastie has been selected as winning image.  Trikes like this conjure up many memories for older and not so old kiwis of hours of backyard mobility (and minor injuries) for themselves, friends, children, grandchildren, ...  Stu's images always use depth of field and/or light with a lot of intentionality and skill producing often dramatic images such as this trike.  Well done Stu $125 went into the bank system for you today.

Neighbourhood view looking from Devonport to Auckland CBD
, by Graham Prentice has been selected as runner up image.  Showing the backyard of a city dweller, with the backyard merging into the neighbourhood and the beach (or Auckland's playground harbour) beyond.  The framing adds an element of the historical nature of the regional architecture to the image.  The (not NZ) song Beach in my backyard strangely springs to mind, despite being penned '1,000 miles from the sea', and there being no 'wahines in grass skirts' in the image.  Well done again Graham, $75 went into the bank system for you today.

November Comp Subject - Bokeh
Whilst definitions vary, Wikipedia bokeh definition will suffice for this competition. Note in particular talk (in this definition) of areas of the image having a pleasing out of focus blur effect.

Image Spotted - Billboard
You may have seen a new billboard around sporting an image of a chilld being help upside down by an adult ... congratulations to Jo Currie for this image ... we can not show the image link at present as it is another mychillybin rights managed negotiated sale and hence no longer available to show to or sell to other parties for a period of time.  There is lots of getting ready in the background by mychillybin at present, to support even more rights managed sales going forward in the new year.

Sales - All time records in both August and September
Another all time sales records in September involving both royalty free downloads and negotiated sales.  October has also started well despite the school holidays which are traditionally quieter.   Want a bigger share of this action?  Then the hot downloads page is always worthy of study - showing what customers have purchased.

Processing Time
Processing time for uploads stretched out for quite a while, but is now occuring within a few days (other than for one photographer's pre-arranged bulk upload still being worked through).

Make it easy for us if you can by limiting uploads to say 30 waiting at at time and we will try hard to keep processing timely.  Another part time processor will also be working in the new year.  Another option - some photographers doing very well seem to have a strategy of very regularly uploading just a few superb images, and hence are building portfolios of impressive images in this way.

cheers for now
