shopping - july shopping competition winners
All images submitted were accepted for the library and can be seen at this link, or by searching (with Editorial ticked) for 'Shopping  2012'.

Great to see photographers stepping out of their traditional areas of expertise again to try something new, and producing great images.  Some may have found this subject extra difficult as numbers were down - so something new for August (see later).

The winning image (above) is by Karen Williamson. This is clearly about (the time honoured teenage process of) shopping, has an interesting angled composition with no visual distractions, and the person looks very natural (important with most people images).  Well done Karen - $150 on its way to you later this week.

Four other images made the last short list, as follows:

This competition entry by Graham Prentice shows the produce exceptionally well, and the shopper in a very natural pose nicely placed with interface on the left 'thirds line'.  It would likely have won if there was a little more 'connection' between the shopper and the produce e.g. a slightly outstretched arm with list or similar. A couple of great entries this month from William Connell (champion of competitions).  This one appeals due to 4 real kiwi elements - lotto, dairy, and dairy owner.  The near focus and person movement blur works well for some potential uses of the image, but not so well for others.

This fruit and veg image with the docket included says shopping (noun) clearly.  The fruit arrangement looks natural although the docket seems a little 'placed' rather than just lying there.  Great image regardless, and helathy eating if there is still any left. Pippa de Court.  Most parents can relate to a tired child during a shopping event.  This first competition entry by Mark Meredith captures this emotion well, with a nice thirds composition.  Captured emotions make good images.  The visual connection to shopping is not quite as strong.

Thanks to all the others who entered as well - including for the lateral thinging in the ladybird out shoping (or hunting?).

August competition subject ... a kiwi image with thirds rule composition

The subject for the August photo competition comes from a composition approach - and requires a thirds rule composition, rather than a specified subject - so leaves subject choice wide open.  People, landscapes, etc ...

Thanks to Dan Reynolds for this thirds rule competition icon, which is selling well.   Of course there are many other great composition techniques too - but for this competion we are looking for great Kiwi images with clear thirds rule  composition.

Remember you can enter up to 3 images, but they must be entered all at the same time.  If you have problems just upload them normally and drop us an email - we are flexible enough to cope. Closes 5pm Friday August 31st.

You have to be in to win, so all the best - as you approach family, friends, colleagues, or yourself, etc to act as models for your thirds rule images, or with looking outdoors for great light and thirds rule compositions.

cheers for now
