I think to deliver something on subject is a hard task, so I'd have liked those photos that are closer to the theme of making. Of the ones that haven't been selected in the final 6 I vote for the girl making carrot cake, money, making coffee and the chicken one ( I know probably too many!). Of the finalists: the girl on the beach
cheers

Selections of photos for Making……….. in the top 6.
Always a difficult task when it comes to judging submitted photos for competitions.
I don’t take offence at all if people don’t agree with what I see as we all have very different views. But from my experience in critiquing photos for competitions I would like to put in a couple comments on ones chosen in the final 6.
Judging competitions, you look at what were the requirements.
We had:
1. The subject; Making………
2. Ideally some visual NZ connection.
3. Quality

To me: Title of the image is paramount in competitions, as that is what judging a photo’s content is taken on.

101557-409; Making you happy – Hula Hooping.
Great shot, movement is always hard to capture, but I can’t see a face, so how do I know they are happy. So I would not have chosen this one.

BUT yes on the; 101557 – 408 of Lynns - Making a wave.
Fantastic sharpness and depth to the image, freezing the action. The diagonal composition of the person with only the relevant content being the feet on the board making the wave, don’t need a face. Water sports very NZ and quality fantastic.

100468 – 302; A young girl making sandcastles on the beach. Wonderful shot for colour and composition, but where is the sand castles. I think the title of the photo puts this one aside for me, it’s more playing in the sand or making holes/patterns in the sand. Yes, beaches are very NZ and the quality looks great, but in the title to what’s in the photo I would not have chosen it. I was expecting the silhouette of a sand castle against the golden colours.

BUT I would have chosen 100193 – 4752; Making soap bubbles.
Excellent detail in the activity of making bubbles, great composition with a very NZ landmark in the background (Rangitoto Island). Hand perfectly placed and detailed so you can see the ring she is blowing bubbles through. Ticks all the boxes for the subject, the NZ connection and the quality for me. Fantastic, well done.

101261 – 2060; Making plans (for their wedding). Maybe they are, but what tells me that in this photo? I think the title of the photo puts this one aside for me, there is no content that shows me making plans. Though another beautiful image for colour and yes I see fun or romance in the autumn leaves, so a title like making the most of Autumn, or you make me smile, or making eyes at you, would have explained the image better. So on the title and nothing showing me that plans are being made, I would have not chosen it.
(Edited by the chillys - Sorry we seem to have reached a limit on how many images can be shown in a post - will see if we can extend next week to show the rest in this message)

BUT I might have chosen 101261 – 2061; Making harvest of a ripe oates crop.
As soon as I saw this I got the feeling of making the season’s harvest, very NZ, great colours in a layer effect from the golds and lighter of the crop to the hills in the background. Harvester is working but where are the oates going, no truck under the chute, so for me it’s a maybe as it’s not the complete image for the tiltle, but more than the making plans one.
#101261_2061 (See below)

Better leave here now before it turns into a book!
Just my couple of ideas and as I mentioned earlier, we are all different in how we see things, I have no intentions in offending or upsetting anyone, it’s just how I see it.

Love to hear anyone else’s comments.

I took the theme, "making" very loosly as it gave me the opportunity to shoot a pic and then figure out how to turn it into something - 'making'. Its a good way for the Chillies to fill the site with much needed images - hence the new 'working' theme. The site is in need of model relseased people working at day to day jobs etc. They have added a nice twist and a bit of fun, giving us a bit of a nudge. I just look upon it as being a challenge not to be taken too seriously.

To me,i would've selected images #103106_137,making cappuccino....#101261_2061,harvesting oats,and#101674_668,making a commitment...as the top 3 from the "Making" contest.I would have included my rainbow of course but the quality is c__p.To me the above entries are the only ones i feel are in line with the "Making" theme...i could be wrong,it's not the first or last time .But all the best to the finalists.

Oh,and if there was room for a guest judge on the M.C.B.panel of judges i would vote for Kathleen, good call on your observations and well worded.

The theme given was aimed to be loosely interpreted, so I think all have been cleverly worked to fit within the rules for entry. Well done to all entrants and thanks MCB for the inspiration these little competitions bring. I, for one, am grateful for all the nudges, tips and suggestions I can avail myself of.

Of the finalists I love "Making me laugh". Lovely energy, cultural and multi-generational and with the NZ flax in the background. It's a good people shot with obvious kiwi connection.

I also like the surf one for its freshness, light, and composition.

If I were to pick a third I personally would have gone for the oats harvest one, but of the finalists my third preference is the hula hoop image. There is no head but I could see it as fitting in to a school/preschool document. It's bright, quirky, fun and a unique shot which puts it in my line of sight.

Good luck to all 6 for the final results.

Good luck also to June participants - perhaps a few more of you out there might venture to enter an image (or 3) this month?!

Hi Kathleen, thanks for your great constructive and instructive points. All very valid and taken on board. As a new entrant to competitions all comments are helpful to create better and stronger competitions. Maybe the Chilly team would consider inviting you as a guest judge, you certainly have the eye for it. Thanks Karen

My very hearty congratulations to the 4 winners and thanks again to MCB - this time for lovely detailed explanations of what they liked about the images on their shortlist and the other 3 images. This is incredibly helpful information to guide us all toward more of what MCB wants.

Congratulations, Kathleen! I don't envy anyone on the judging panel so I consider you very brave to do so. Hope you have fun with it too (I am sure you will).
